The Cherry Dickel Cocktail Recipe, Vintage-inspired recipes from the Tiki Bar

Inspired by liquors and liqueurs popular in the 1950s, I decided to try to balance the sweet with the strong with this concoction. Guess what? It worked. Mainly because Luxardo is not really as “sweet” as many people think, and Dickel is stronger than you might expect.

The Cherry Dickel

1 oz Luxardo Cherry

Liqueur

1.5 oz George Dickel 8 Year Old Sour Mash Whisky

Coke

Fill a tall (highball) glass 1/2 with ice. Add the Luxardo and Dickel and stir. Top with Coke and garnish with Luxardo cherries.

Now, I know Luxardo cherries aren’t cheap. But don’t try to do this with ordinary, bright red maraschino cherries and grenadine. It will be so sweet you’ll gag. After all, Luxardo literally invented maraschino cherries. For a cocktail like this, use the real thing.

Check out this cool vintage barware. I bought a set of six these glasses in Portland, OR about 14 years ago. Four made it back to FL in one piece, and I’ve been very careful with them. Yes, that’s gold leaf blue and white designs. They are very cool. What a great way to spend a warm South Florida Friday March evening, sitting at the Tiki bar, sipping this delicious new cocktail. Don’t be jealous…there’s plenty or room in the subtropics for you too! Come on down!
