If you’re in the Fort Lauderdale area on Sunday, April 28, swing by the 5-Points Lounge for a very special Tiki fundraiser.

Dubbed the “Sunday Aloha Fun-Raiser”, proceeds from this show put on by Polynesian Proud Productions will benefit Preston Weber, 14 year-old Jr. World FireKnife Champion and Fort Lauderdale local. Preston will be flying out to Hawaii in May to defend his title, and this fundraiser is to help him get there.

The event will feature Polynesian music, live Tahitian drumming of Uhi Api, PolyProud performance, beautiful Hula, RONIN TAIKO (Featuring Marina The Fire Eating Mermaid drumming), special guest performers, $5 Hawaiian Plate Lunch sponsored by the NEW Florida Hawaiian Civic Association, island treats by way of Kauai, from DelaCruz Delights and Onolicious Cakes by Kathleen.

This event is open to the public, and any donations at the door are greatly appreciated. There will also be raffles and prizes, so throw on your best Aloha shirt and swing down to the 5-Points Lounge, 2608 South Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, Fl. There is Free parking in back of building.

5-Points is located at the KREEPY TIKI PLAZA, “Home of South Florida’s only 20ft. Hula Girl landmark”. Kreepy Tiki Tattoo is a very kool place for vintage & Tiki lovers. They are not only kool kats and kittens who ink some very impressive tattoos, they also carry some vintage clothing and goodies, and have Tiki-esque art by local artists including one of my favorites, De Tiki.

PRESTON WEBER has been performing since he was 10 years old at the Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale. He won his first Jr. World FireKnife Championship at 11 (2010), then skipped a year to audition for America’s Got Talent where he placed 49th out of 100,000 auditioned acts. Preston won his 2nd Jr World Championship title at 13 (2012). He is now 14 and looking for his third win! Congratulations and best of luck to Preston…break a leg!

  • International Exotic Cocktail Day 2012- Friday, Oct 5th

Posted on October 4th, 2012 "Tiki Chris" Pinto No comments

exotic-cocktail-dayIt’s nearly here – tomorrow is the third annual International Exotic Cocktail Day!

#IECD is a day for celebrating all that is great, swingin’, kool and magical about Tiki & Exotic Cocktails. Hey, there’s a day for everything now…why not have a day to celebrate something that really matters? BOOZE.

People all over the world will be celebrating this day by having an exotic cocktail (or two, or three…). Wherever, whenever, with whomever…as long as you have a Tiki drink in hand and a smile on your face.

I’ll be celebrating this day all day. After all, I invented it so I guess I should, right?

I’ll be making Zombies for my co-workers for at-work happy hour (I work at an ad agency, so liquor is ok here in moderation). With any luck and if traffic is on my side, I’ll be swinging by The Wreck Bar to see Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid’s underwater show, then will head over to the Mai Kai around 8 to drink Mai Tais and Jet Pilots, and listen to the Cutback Surf Band. Those cats can really rock old-school surf tunes.

I’ll be finishing the night at home, at my private Tiki bar, affectionately known as Pirate’s Cove Tiki Bar. I’m thinking I’ll mix up a Pirate’s Wench, my own Tiki cocktail concoction.

maitaiHappy International Exotic Cocktail Day, kids! Live it up!

Join the #IECD event on Facebook!

  • In Jersey this weekend? Go to Asbury Park for the Endless Summer Tiki Festival!

Posted on September 27th, 2012 "Tiki Chris" Pinto 2 comments

greetings_from_asbury_park-149190809_stdPeople don’t usually think of the Jersey Shore when they think of Tiki. The boards are about surf and sand, T-shirts and bikinis, hot dogs and fries, not so much about Mai Tais and Aloha shirts. But that’s changing this weekend, as the Asbury Park Boardwalk present their Polynesian-Inspired Event, The Endless Summer Tiki Festival!

Get ready for three days of Poly-pop fun, kicking off on Friday, September 28. There will be plenty of Tiki-inspired events, movies, art, collectibles, and more for festival-goers of all ages.

Here’s some info on the event from the Tiki Festival’s press release:

“We couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate Tiki culture than on the Asbury Park Boardwalk,” commented Marilyn Schlossbach, owner of Langosta Lounge. “The boardwalk businesses, music venues, bars and restaurants are excited to program special events and promotions for Tiki fans from all over the country. We look forward to the ‘Endless Summer Tiki Weekend’ becoming an annual event in Asbury Park, joining the likes of the Ohana Luau in Lake George and the Long Beach Tiki Festival.”

The “Endless Summer Tiki Weekend” will begin on Friday, September 28 with a special launch party and art show at the new Asbury Park Yacht Club on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Polynesian pinball at the Silverball Museum, a bonfire on the beach, and a live drum circle hula-hoop performance will round out the opening night festivities.asburyboardwalk

On Saturday, September 29, the Festival’s Rodeo Surf Contest will begin at 7:00 a.m. and include a full day of wave-riding in support of The Jersey Shore Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Later that day, animal lovers will be invited to bring their four-legged friends to the Wonder Bar for a Tiki-inspired Yappy Hour and pet-friendly fashion show. The Festival will continue with a Tiki golf tournament at Asbury 18 Mini Golf, Tiki carving, lei-making and hula-hopping lessons at various boardwalk locations.  The classic 1961 film “Blue Hawaii” presented by the Asbury Park Film Initiative will screen on the Third Avenue Beach at 8:00 p.m.  The Jersey Shore Roller Girls will also entertain Tiki crowds with a bout at Convention Hall.

The third and final day of the “Endless Summer Tiki Weekend” will include another Tiki Yappy Hour at the Wonder Bar, the continuation of the “Endless Summer Tiki Art Show” at the Asbury Park Yacht Club, and a pool party at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel. Blue Hawaii Vintage will present a vintage fashion show in the Carousel starting at 2:00 p.m. and Elvis fans can find El King, the Hawaiian Elvis, strolling the boards on Sunday with a special 3:45 performance on the 4th Avenue Green Space.  Attendees will then be invited to bring their beach chairs and towels to Asbury Park’s 3nd Ave. beach for a screening of the original “Endless Summer.”

wonderbarIn addition to the varied day-time events, live music at legendary Asbury Park music venues, including the Stone Pony and Wonder Bar, will be programmed in conjunction with the Festival. The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel will offer festival-goers with a discounted room rate throughout the weekend; interested parties are instructed to mention the event when securing a reservation. For more info visit the website at www.apboardwalk.com

Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the event, since I’m about 1400 miles away, but it does sound like fun. Like the “Yappy Hour”…all I can think of is a bunch of dogs getting tanked on Zombies.

This event reminds me of some of the Tiki-ness that the Wildwood Boardwalk used to have. There was a Poly-themed motel there, years ago, and a snack bar on the boardwalk that was decorated like a Tiki hut. The piers always had rides with Tiki themes too, over the years, and lots of plastic palm trees.

Anyway, Cheers to the good people of Asbury Park for keeping the Tiki tradition alive, and here’s to hoping you have a fun and prosperous Endless Summer Tiki Weekend!

  • National Rum Day? Today? YES!

You can't get any "rummier" than a Rum Barrel at The Mai Kai

You can't get any "rummier" than a Rum Barrel at The Mai Kai

    Today is National Rum Day!

    What is National Rum Day?

It’s a day to enjoy rum.

    I do that every day.

    Today is special.

    Why?

    I don’t know.

Seriously, today IS National Rum Day, and plenty of news outlets and bloggers are writing articles about rum, different kinds of rum, and rum drinks. But what exactly is today all about, and who started it?

Apparently nobody knows. After an intensive search of teh interwebs, I couldn’t find one post or site that could tell me who started it, when, or why. My first guess was that it was started by a rum manufacturer or distributor, but a quick look at Bacardi, Appleton Estate and Cruzan’s websites yielded not a single mention of the day. Then again, who cares? It’s an excuse to drink!

    RUM COCKTAILS

Everyone is posting their favorite rum cocktails. I saw no less than 10 posts on how to make a Cuba Libre (such a difficult drink to mix, with all those three ingredients). Well, I won’t bore you with the typical rum recipes here. Here, I’ll give you two of my own concoctions to try out tonight.

    THE PIRATE’S WENCH
    by Tiki Chris P.pirates-wench

One of my favorites, this drink is easy to make using stuff you probably already have behind the Tiki bar. Here are the ingredients:
    1 oz Sailor Jerry Rum
    1 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
1 oz Dark Rum (I prefer Meyer’s or Black Seal)
    3 drops bitters
    1/4 teaspoon vanilla
    sprinkle of nutmeg
    Coke
    Lime

This is kind of a Cuba Libre done in a kick-ass Tiki style. Get the full recipe here.

    TIKI GALORE
    by Tiki Chris P.

A new twist on an old favorite, the Tiki Galore is kind of like what you’d get if an amaretto sour collided with a rum truck.

    1 oz. Amaretto
    1 oz. Dark Rum
    1/2 oz. Triple Sec
    2 oz. Orange Juice
    1/2 tspn powdered sugar

tiki-galore-drinkIt’s sweet but not syrupy sweet, and the rum balances out the flavors nicely. Get the full recipe here.

Well, happy National Rum Day, and don’t forget in October the much more inclusive and fun INTERNATIONAL EXOTIC COCKTAIL DAY, October 5, 2012! FB users can join the fun on the official facebook page here.

  • Tiki Oasis 12 Starts Thursday, Aug. 16, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Diego!

tiki-oaisis-12“You Mission, if you choose to accept it…” is how this year’s Tiki Oasis website welcomes you. And there’s a good reason – the theme this year for the world’s largest Tiki gathering is Exotic Espionage & Polynesian Pulp!

As if thousands of Tikiphiles getting together for drinks with entertainment and vintage merchandise wasn’t enough, the cats and kittens who put on this shindig decided to go with the ultra-cool mid-century spy theme to spice things up even more.

    Marina the Mermaid

    Marina the Mermaid

While the expected entertainment includes surf bands, Exotica bands, dancers, DJs and burlesque beauties, this year visitors can dig some extra hipness concentrated on the spy theme, including a symposium on the cinematic/television history of exotic espionage and Polynesian pulp by fellow author Will “The Thrill” Viharo. Fort Lauderdale’s own Marina the Fire Eating Mermaid will also perform, along with swingin’ bands like The Exotics, Thee Swank Bastards and The Tikiyaki Orchestra.

    Will "The Thrill"

    Will "The Thrill"

As always there will be a groovy art show and the ever popular antique/classic/hot rod car show, plus appearances and seminars by the likes of Sven Kirsten and Meghan Mayhem, all with a spy-scene tilt. Dig it.

For a complete list of entertainment, schedule and other info visit the Tiki-O website at www.tikioasis.com/2012.
