The Vampire Lovers, 1970: Mod Movie Monday

vampire-lovers-2It may not be Halloween, but that’s no reason not to crank up the air, curl up under the sheets and take in one of the most fun-to-watch freak-a-rama movies from the early 1970s…

Hammer Films Presents

The Vampire Lovers, 1970

Starring the voluptuous Igrid Pitt, George Cole, Roger Morton, Kate O’Mara and Peter Cushing.

For those of you who are not hip to the Hammer horror films, these are the kats who gave us the great Dracula films of the 50s-70s starring Christopher Lee as the the Count and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. They’re also responsible for One Million Years B.C. with Raquel Welch, and other great titles like The Brides of Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein, and Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb.vampire-lovers-1

This flick is one of my favorites. Great (sometimes cheesy) sets, hot, sexy ’60s vampire chicks, scenes that don’t make much sense but look really kool and screams like you never heard before come together to make this a truly fun film to watch.

Then of course, there are the Lesbian vampires. The film tip-toes around the subject at a time when you couldn’t even say ‘lesbian’ on TV…that is until they cut loose about half way through, and go all out (well, all out for 1970, anyway. Wait till you see where she sucks the blood from).

vampire-lovers-4The blood and gore is just enough to keep you interested without losing your lunch. There are plenty of blood-sucking deaths and garlic galore, plus a little 1970s-style nudity to add to the fun.

Don’t expect Oscar-winning performances or great writing here. These movies were made for fun and a quick buck, not for awards.vampire-lovers-3

Let’s see, what to eat and drink with this flick…I guess the obvious would be Blood Pudding and a Bloody Mary. But maybe you can get a little more creative…like a roast mutton and Dracula’ Blood Wine 😉

Here’s the trailer from 1970…
