Retro Movie Alert: MACHETE Opens This Weekend

machete-lohanRobert Rodriguez does it again with a grainy, early-70’s style badass movie, MACHETE.

Machete is a story of deceit and revenge. Like all fo Rodriguez’s work, it is highly stylized and promises to be one hell of a flick. There’s sure to be plenty of blood, guns, knives, violence and laughs. And web sources say that Lindsay Lohan will be mostly naked onscreen, which is A-ok with me.machete_alba

machete-trejoYes, I’m not kidding. De Niro in a film with Steven Seagal and Cheech Marin. And Don Johnson. And Lindsay Lohan. And Jessica Alba. And…ok, you get my point.

For you retro style fans, get ready to bask in the orangy faded glow of low-budget funk-era cinema. Taking his cues from movies like Dual, Vanishing Point and Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! Rodriguez will certainly not disappoint with this period-style flick.

It’s times like these I wish I still had my 1973 Chevy Caprice Classic with the wire caps, dual spotlights, diamond-plate fender skirts and ’49 Packard hood ornament. That low-slung beaut would have been perfect to cruise up to the theater in for this flick.

Here’s the Trailer for Machete, opening this weekend:

    1. Thanks, I checked out your video review. Well done. Although I can’t agree with you on some points. I wonder if you get what this movie was really about?

Have you ever seen Coffee, or Superfly, or any other low-budget exploitation movies of the 1970s? They weren’t made very well but were gritty and loads of fun. There was plenty of over-the-top action, and they always carried a thin plot line (usually about how “the Man” was putting them down and how they had to fight for their own sense of justice.) Rodriguez did make an action movie. His talent for that goes far beyond this flick. What he did was make a true-to-the era 1970s style Mex-sploitation film that was dead on. There’s a reason he picked Lohan and Alba…two hot chicks who are not known for their acting skills…to play against Di Niro, one or the greatest actors of all time. It fits the formula. And that rumble scene at the end…def not played straight. Played 100% for the retro-feel spoof that the whole movie is. Try watching the movies I’ve mentioned here and I think you’ll enjoy Machete a lot more, for what it is.

Thanks again for posting, you’re always welcome here!

  1. finally got to see this today (Labor Day) and wasn’t disappointed! Perfect balance of blood, violence, bad acting, great acting and naked women. (De Nero stole the show in a couple of scenes). Highly recommend this flick to anyone who digs this kind of movie.
