  • It’s National Rum Day! August 16, so here’s your weekend Tiki Bar Cocktails!

Posted on August 15th, 2013 "Tiki Chris" Pinto 2 comments

Yes, there is a “day” for everything…but when there’s a day for something as important as RUM, you know damned well there will be a post about it at The Tiki Lounge! A quick search of teh interwebs doesn’t give us much info on the origin of this fantabulous day, but who cares!

Ok, first of all, a very nice person (Christine) representing Captain Morgan’s Rum sent me some very tasty-looking recipes. I haven’t tried them yet (saving them for Rum Day) but I dig Captain, and I’m pretty sure these are going to be winners. I’ll list them at the end of this post.

Second, I can’t help but bring back one of my favorite original recipes,

The Pirate’s Wench, Your Weekend Tiki Bar Cocktail

I came up with this a few years ago while experimenting at the Tiki Bar on the lanai. It’s a twist on a Cuba Libre, and it will knock your socks off!

1 oz strong spiced Rum (Captain Morgan Black, Sailor Jerry, Kracken work nicely)
    1 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
    1 oz Dark Rum (I prefer Meyer’s)
    3 drops bitters
    1/4 teaspoon vanilla
    sprinkle of nutmeg
    Coke
    Lime

Start with a shaker of ice, add the three rums, bitter, and vanilla. Shake it up, baby. Strain into a large Tiki mug filled with ice. Liquor should fill mug about half way. Fill with Coke, squeeze in juice of 1/4 lime, and two shakes of nutmeg, stir. Top with a little more nutmeg and lime wedge. Damned good grog! It you like it sweet, add a little pineapple juice to taste. If you like it super strong, add a 151 floater, if you dare, and call it the Drunken Wench. Avast! And May Ye Enjoy The Captain’s Original Concoction !

You can't get any "rummier" than a Rum Barrel at The Mai Kai

    Today is National Rum Day!

    What is National Rum Day?

It’s a day to enjoy rum.

    I do that every day.

    Today is special.

    Why?

    I don’t know.

Seriously, today IS National Rum Day, and plenty of news outlets and bloggers are writing articles about rum, different kinds of rum, and rum drinks. But what exactly is today all about, and who started it?

Apparently nobody knows. After an intensive search of teh interwebs, I couldn’t find one post or site that could tell me who started it, when, or why. My first guess was that it was started by a rum manufacturer or distributor, but a quick look at Bacardi, Appleton Estate and Cruzan’s websites yielded not a single mention of the day. Then again, who cares? It’s an excuse to drink!

    RUM COCKTAILS

Everyone is posting their favorite rum cocktails. I saw no less than 10 posts on how to make a Cuba Libre (such a difficult drink to mix, with all those three ingredients). Well, I won’t bore you with the typical rum recipes here. Here, I’ll give you two of my own concoctions to try out tonight.

    THE PIRATE’S WENCH
    by Tiki Chris P.pirates-wench

One of my favorites, this drink is easy to make using stuff you probably already have behind the Tiki bar. Here are the ingredients:
    1 oz Sailor Jerry Rum
    1 oz Malibu Coconut Rum
1 oz Dark Rum (I prefer Meyer’s or Black Seal)
    3 drops bitters
    1/4 teaspoon vanilla
    sprinkle of nutmeg
    Coke
    Lime

This is kind of a Cuba Libre done in a kick-ass Tiki style. Get the full recipe here.

    TIKI GALORE
    by Tiki Chris P.

A new twist on an old favorite, the Tiki Galore is kind of like what you’d get if an amaretto sour collided with a rum truck.

    1 oz. Amaretto
    1 oz. Dark Rum
    1/2 oz. Triple Sec
    2 oz. Orange Juice
    1/2 tspn powdered sugar

tiki-galore-drinkIt’s sweet but not syrupy sweet, and the rum balances out the flavors nicely. Get the full recipe here.

Well, happy National Rum Day, and don’t forget in October the much more inclusive and fun INTERNATIONAL EXOTIC COCKTAIL DAY, October 5, 2012! FB users can join the fun on the official facebook page here.

gosslings-black-sealToday, August 16th is National Rum Day. Now, I’m not exactly sure why it’s National Rum Day. As a matter of fact, after extensive research I can’t find anyone claiming this holiday, how it got started or why it exists. But who cares? It’s a great excuse to imbibe our favorite Tiki Cocktails made with the spirits of the Caribbean!

Here’s the link to Tiki Lounge Talk’s Exotic Cocktails page, most of which are made with rum.

And here’s a link to International Exotic Cocktail Day, which is coming up fast!

Aloha & Mahalos from the Tiki Bar!

BTW: There’s a lot of rum getting slurped down in Murder on Tiki Island!
