When we think of Mid Century, the usual cut-off is around 1963, when world events like JFK, The Beatles, and the rise of hippie culture brought on major societal changes. But there was overlap, of course; no era in history is cut-and-dry, and there was blending of the traditional ’40s and ’50s modern aesthetic with the early stages of ultra-modern, Mod, and psychedelic trends.
It would have been accepted…even common…for the younger Mad Men-era set to indulge in some brightly-colored decor and flower-festooned parties in the mid to late 1960s. After all, they wouldn’t want to be branded as squares when only in their 30s!
And while the tie-dyed look of the “kids” was never going to make it into the cocktail set’s wardrobe, it’s a pretty good bet that some of these kats and kittens were hip to the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (my mother, for instance, who was big into the cocktail culture of the late 50s was only in her late 20s in the late 60s).
So this year we decorated Pirate’s Cove Tiki Bar in a bizarrely eclectic mash of mid-century antiques and Psychedelic ’60s Black Light Insanity. Turn on, tune in, and drop out, it’s time for Peace, Love…and Murder!
